Located within the new Istanbul Modern Museum building designed by Renzo Piano, Restaurant Modern is envisioned as a seamless extension of the museum’s architectural and cultural experience. Designed by Autoban, the space brings industrial clarity, sculptural simplicity, and understated sophistication to Istanbul’s most prominent new art landmark.
Autoban’s approach honors the language of the museum: raw yet refined, monumental yet quiet. The interiors reflect an industrial palette—concrete, steel, and brushed metals—softened by natural textures, clean lines, and the glow of custom lighting. Thoughtfully placed shelving units and linear furniture anchor the open-plan layout, creating rhythm and intimacy within the airy structure.
At the heart of the space is a sleek, sculptural bar that introduces warmth through dark wood and polished finishes. Bespoke shelving and modular furniture pieces support the space’s canteen functionality while maintaining a strong visual identity.
A spacious terrace opens toward the Bosphorus and the historic peninsula, linking the dining experience with the broader context of Istanbul’s geography and cultural heritage. Here, visitors can dine al fresco with panoramic views, reinforcing the museum’s unique position as a bridge between art, city, and sea.
Restaurant Modern is more than a museum restaurant, it is an architectural statement in itself, embodying a balance of creativity and restraint. With a vision that complements Renzo Piano’s architecture while establishing its own distinct identity, Autoban has created a space that is at once contemporary, civic, and timeless.
